Description

This Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak recipe features tender, juicy patties simmered in a rich, savory gravy made with vegetarian Worcestershire sauce and a natural gelling agent. Easy to prepare, this comforting dish is perfect for busy days or cozy dinners and pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, vegetables, or salads. It makes meal preparation effortless without losing any flavor or warmth.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs (gluten-free if desired)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 2 tbsp plant-based butter
  • 1/4 cup vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 to 2 tsp natural gelling agent
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly distributed. Form the mixture into oval-shaped patties and place them on a plate or tray prepared for cooking.
  2. Brown the Patties: Heat plant-based butter in a skillet over medium heat. Brown each patty on both sides for about 2-3 minutes to develop flavor and texture, then transfer them into the slow cooker. This step adds caramelization to the meat, enhancing the final taste.
  3. Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add more plant-based butter if needed, then whisk in vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and season with salt and pepper. Gradually pour in the natural gelling agent while stirring continuously to thicken the gravy. Once smooth and simmering, pour the gravy over the browned patties in the slow cooker.
  4. Slow Cook: Cover the slow cooker and cook the Salisbury steaks on low for 6 to 8 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours. The slow heat allows the patties to become tender and soak up the rich gravy flavors.
  5. Serve: Carefully spoon the Salisbury steaks and generous amounts of gravy onto plates. Serve with your favorite sides such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad for a warm, satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Do not skip browning as it develops flavor and improves texture before slow cooking.
  • Use freshly diced onions for better flavor in patties and gravy.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning of the gravy before pouring over the patties.
  • Arrange patties in a single layer in the slow cooker for even cooking and gravy coverage.
  • Add vegetables like carrots or mushrooms to the slow cooker for extra nutrition and complexity.
