Description

Enjoy a comforting and easy-to-make Salisbury Steak with rich mushroom gravy and smoky turkey bacon. This recipe features juicy patties made from ground beef combined with savory mushrooms and fragrant onions, simmered in a flavorful gravy thickened with a natural gelling agent. Perfect for family dinners or gatherings, this dish pairs beautifully with classic sides like mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a hearty, satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 lb fresh ground beef (with some fat content)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic (natural), minced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup plant-based milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

For the Mushroom Gravy

  • 4 slices smoked turkey bacon
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (such as cremini or button)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth (natural)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (natural)
  • 1 teaspoon natural gelling agent
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic (natural), breadcrumbs, plant-based milk, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to keep patties tender. Shape the mixture into evenly sized oval patties for uniform cooking.
  2. Cook the Smoked Turkey Bacon: Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook smoked turkey bacon until crispy. Remove bacon from skillet, chop into small pieces, and set aside. Leave the rendered fat in the skillet to flavor the patties.
  3. Brown the Patties: Using the same skillet with bacon fat, cook the Salisbury Steak patties over medium-high heat to brown both sides, forming a rich crust. Once browned, remove patties and set aside while preparing the gravy.
  4. Make the Mushroom Gravy: Add sliced mushrooms and chopped onions to the skillet with bacon fat. Sauté until they are softened and caramelized. Pour in beef broth (natural), apple cider vinegar (natural), and sprinkle in the natural gelling agent while whisking constantly to create a smooth sauce. Let the gravy simmer gently to thicken, then stir in the chopped smoked turkey bacon pieces.
  5. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the browned Salisbury Steak patties to the skillet with the mushroom gravy. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the patties to soak up the sauce and finish cooking through.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: When patties are tender and the gravy is thick and luscious, plate the Salisbury Steak with a generous amount of mushroom gravy. Serve alongside preferred sides and garnish with fresh chopped parsley or chives for added freshness and color.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the ground beef mixture to keep patties tender and juicy.
  • Use a cast iron skillet for the best sear and enhanced flavor on patties and mushrooms.
  • Adjust gravy thickness by adding more or less natural gelling agent as needed.
  • Let the patties rest a few minutes after cooking to lock in juices.
  • Always use fresh mushrooms for optimum flavor and texture in the gravy.
  • For gluten-free, substitute breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs or crushed gluten-free crackers.
  • Plant-based milk can be almond, soy, oat, or your preferred choice.
