Description

This rich homemade Pizza Sauce combines ripe tomatoes, aromatic herbs, and a natural gelling agent to create a perfectly thick and flavorful base for your pizza. Quick to prepare with everyday ingredients, this versatile sauce also works wonderfully as a dip or pasta sauce, ensuring fresh, vibrant flavor in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Tomato Base

  • 2 cups ripe tomatoes, fresh peeled or canned whole peeled

Aromatics and Seasonings

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon natural gelling agent
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (natural)
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (natural)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tomatoes: Drain excess liquid from canned tomatoes or blanch fresh tomatoes to remove skins if preferred. Roughly chop to your desired texture, either chunky or smooth.
  2. Sauté Aromatics: Heat olive oil over medium heat and gently sauté minced garlic until fragrant but not browned to form the flavor base.
  3. Simmer the Sauce: Add the prepared tomatoes, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, salt, and black pepper to the pan. Simmer gently, stirring frequently to blend flavors evenly.
  4. Incorporate Herbs and Natural Gelling Agent: Stir in dried oregano and fresh chopped basil just before finishing. Sprinkle in the natural gelling agent while whisking continuously to achieve ideal spoonable consistency.
  5. Blend if Desired: For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to puree to your liking. Otherwise, leave the texture chunky for a rustic feel. Let cool before using.

Notes

  • Use the freshest or highest quality canned tomatoes for the best flavor.
  • Simmer the sauce slowly to blend flavors without burning sugars.
  • Add apple cider vinegar gradually to balance acidity and sweetness.
  • Add fresh herbs at the end of cooking to keep their vibrant color and aroma.
  • Adjust the amount of natural gelling agent incrementally to get your preferred sauce thickness.
  • Customize by adding red chili flakes for heat, roasting tomatoes for smoky flavor, or substituting herbs like thyme or rosemary.
  • Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.
  • Freeze in single portions for convenience, thaw before use.
  • Rewarm gently on stove or microwave, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching.
