Ingredients

Scale

Onion Rings

  • 2 large sweet onions, peeled and sliced into 0.5 cm rings

Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or chickpea/rice flour for gluten-free version)
  • 1 tbsp natural gelling agent
  • 1 tsp natural baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (natural)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika (natural)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk or oat milk (plant-based)
  • 1 tsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural) (optional)

For Frying

  • Olive oil or vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare and Slice the Onions: Peel the sweet onions and slice them into even thin rings about half a centimeter thick to ensure uniform cooking and crispiness.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour), natural gelling agent, natural baking powder, garlic powder (natural), smoked paprika (natural), salt, and black pepper to create the seasoning mix.
  3. Create the Batter: Gradually whisk plant-based milk into the dry ingredients until you form a smooth batter thick enough to coat the onion rings thoroughly without dripping too much. Stir in vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural) if using.
  4. Coat the Onion Rings: Dip each onion ring gently into the batter, making sure each one is fully coated. For extra crunchiness, dip the rings a second time after the first coat has set slightly.
  5. Fry for Golden Crispiness: Heat olive oil or vegetable oil in a deep pan to around 175°C (350°F). Fry the coated onion rings in small batches for 2 to 3 minutes per side or until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  6. Serve Warm: Serve the crispy Onion Ring Chips immediately with your favorite plant-based sauces or enjoy them plain for a satisfying crunch.

Notes

  • Use a thermometer to keep the oil temperature around 175°C (350°F) to achieve even frying without sogginess.
  • Pat sliced onions dry before battering to help the batter stick better.
  • Fry in small batches to maintain oil temperature and retain crispiness.
  • Double dip the rings in batter for a thicker, crunchier coating.
  • Let the batter rest for 5-10 minutes to activate the natural gelling agent and enhance texture.
