This Easy Homemade Naan Bread recipe offers soft, fluffy, and delicious plant-based flatbread you can make quickly at home. With simple ingredients and customizable flavors, it pairs perfectly with a variety of meals and brings warmth and authentic taste to your table.

Ingredients

Scale

Basic Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon natural sugar
  • ¾ cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • ½ cup plain plant-based yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Optional Flavor Enhancers

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced or crushed (natural)
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (natural)
  • Additional olive oil for brushing
  • Optional herbs or spices such as cumin seeds or smoked paprika (natural)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, natural sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until frothy and bubbly to activate the yeast for a perfect rise.
  2. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt. Add the plant-based yogurt, olive oil, and the activated yeast mixture. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Dust a clean surface with flour and knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic, building the gluten network essential for naan’s chewiness.
  4. Let the Dough Rest: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size, developing flavor and texture.
  5. Shape the Naan: Divide the risen dough into equal portions. Roll each portion into an oval or tear-drop shape about 1/4 inch thick. Optionally, brush tops lightly with olive oil for softness.
  6. Cook the Naan: Heat a skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for 2 to 3 minutes on one side until bubbles form, then flip and cook the other side for 1 to 2 minutes. For a finishing touch, brush lightly with olive oil and sprinkle fresh herbs.

Notes

  • Use warm, not hot water to avoid killing the yeast; around 110°F (43°C) is ideal.
  • Allow adequate resting time for the dough to rise for best texture and flavor.
  • Cook naan at high heat for proper puffing and browning.
  • Roll dough gently to keep it fluffy without compressing too thin.
  • Use plant-based yogurt to keep the bread moist and tender.
  • Brush with olive oil or melted plant-based butter (natural) for a glossy, rich finish.
