These easy homemade flour tortillas are soft, flexible, and perfect for wraps, tacos, and more. Made with simple pantry ingredients, they come together quickly and add fresh warmth and flavor to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder (natural)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup warm water

Optional Variations

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley
  • Replace all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for nuttier flavor
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground chili powder or paprika for mild spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Vegetable oil can be substituted with vegan butter (plant-based)

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, natural baking powder, and salt. Whisk them together evenly to distribute the leavening and seasoning throughout the flour.
  2. Add Oil and Water: Gradually pour in the vegetable oil and warm water while stirring to bring the dough together. Stir until the dough starts to form a ball.
  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently for 5 to 7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic, ensuring soft and flexible tortillas.
  4. Rest the Dough: Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rest for at least 15 minutes. This hydrates the flour and relaxes the dough for easier rolling.
  5. Divide and Roll: Divide the dough into equal golf ball-sized portions. Using a rolling pin, roll each piece on a floured surface into thin round circles about 6 to 8 inches in diameter.
  6. Cook the Tortillas: Heat a dry skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for 30 to 45 seconds per side until golden brown spots appear and they puff slightly. Keep cooked tortillas wrapped in a clean towel to stay warm and soft.

Notes

  • Use warm water to soften the dough for tender tortillas.
  • Resting the dough reduces shrinkage and improves flexibility.
  • Use just enough flour when rolling to prevent sticking without drying the dough.
  • Cook on medium heat to avoid burning or undercooking.
  • Stack and cover cooked tortillas to keep them soft and warm.
