  • Total Time: 1 hour 35 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x
  • Diet: Plant-Based

Description

A classic plant-based Apple Pie featuring a flaky crust and tender, naturally thickened apple filling with warm spices. Easy to prepare with simple pantry staples and adaptable for various dietary preferences and flavor variations.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup chilled plant-based butter, cut into small pieces
  • 68 tablespoons cold water

For the Filling

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced crisp apples (e.g., Granny Smith, Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (natural)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (natural)
  • 1/2 teaspoon natural gelling agent dissolved in 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust: Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the chilled plant-based butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water, mixing gently until the dough comes together. Shape the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Make the Filling: Peel and slice the apples. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, lemon juice (natural), vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), apple cider vinegar (natural), and a pinch of salt. Stir in the natural gelling agent dissolved in warm water to thicken the mixture evenly.
  3. Assemble the Pie: On a floured surface, roll out half of the chilled dough to fit a pie dish. Transfer the dough to the dish and pour the apple filling evenly over the crust. Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the filling, sealing the edges firmly by pinching or crimping. Cut vents in the top crust to allow steam to escape while baking.
  4. Bake the Pie: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the pie for 45 to 55 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Remove from oven and let cool to room temperature before slicing to allow the filling to set.

Notes

  • Chill the dough thoroughly to achieve a flaky crust and prevent the plant-based butter from melting too quickly.
  • Use a combination of tart and sweet apples to balance flavor and texture.
  • Adjust the amount of natural gelling agent depending on the juiciness of the apples for ideal filling thickness.
  • Allow the pie to cool completely before slicing for neat, firm slices.
  • If crust edges brown too fast during baking, cover them with foil strips to protect.
